Japanese Black Porcelain Tokkuri Vase — Peacock & Peony
An elegant piece of Japanese decorative porcelain, this striking black-ground tokkuri (sake bottle) form vase is a testament to the refined craftsmanship of mid-to-late 20th century Japanese ware. The deep, jet black glaze — rich and lacquer-like in its lustrous finish, finished with a gold rim — provides a dramatic canvas for an exquisitely detailed scene that wraps fully around the body.
Two magnificent kujaku (peacocks) are depicted in gold, green, and white — one in full proud display with a sweeping fanned tail, the other in a graceful resting pose on the reverse. They are surrounded by blooming botan (peony) flowers in soft pink and white, and delicate gold blossom branches scattered throughout. The peacock and peony pairing is one of the most prestigious and auspicious motifs in Japanese decorative art, symbolising beauty, grace, wealth, and good fortune.
